Her research focuses on supportive care issues in cancer patients. The author of 300+ publications, she seeks to mitigate side effects from the cancer treatment, anxiety related to the cancer and to cancer treatment, and distressing signs and symptoms related to the cancer itself. She is the director and principal investigator on a Mayo Clinic junior faculty training program funded by the National Cancer Institute and provides mentorship to many residents, fellows and junior faculty.

This weight loss appears to predispose patients to extensive morbidity, particularly among older patients.
To date, efforts to reverse this weight loss and prevent this morbidity have been limited.
